Ingredients

1 (12-pack) Sweet Hawaiian Rolls

6 large eggs

1 cup milk (whole or coconut for a twist)

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup crushed pineapple (optional for added tropical flavor)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Maple syrup, for serving

Powdered sugar, for garnish

Fresh fruit (like sliced bananas or berries), for serving

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray.

Prepare the Rolls: Slice the Sweet Hawaiian Rolls in half, horizontally, to create sandwiches. You can also cut them into quarters for a more rustic look. Arrange the rolls cut-side up in the prepared baking dish.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until well combined. If using, stir in the crushed pineapple and chopped nuts for added flavor and texture.

Assemble the Bake: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the rolls, making sure to soak each piece. Gently press down on the rolls to help them absorb the liquid. You can cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for a richer flavor.

Bake: Remove from the fridge (if prepped ahead) and let it sit for about 15 minutes at room temperature. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set.

Cool and Serve: Let the French toast bake cool for about 10 minutes before cutting into pieces. Serve warm, drizzled with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar. Add fresh fruit on top for extra sweetness and contrast.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour (plus optional soaking time) | Servings: 8-10
