Ingredients

1 cup pearl barley

4 cups water or vegetable broth

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon butter or olive oil

1 cup milk (or plant-based milk)

2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Fresh fruits (banana, berries, or apple) for topping

Nuts or seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Rinse the pearl barley in cold water to remove any impurities. Drain well.

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed barley and 4 cups of water or vegetable broth. Bring to a boil.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the barley is tender. Stir occasionally.

When the barley is cooked, stir in salt, butter (or olive oil), milk, maple syrup (or honey), and ground cinnamon. Mix well and allow it to simmer for another 5-10 minutes until the porridge reaches your desired consistency.

Remove from heat and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Serve warm in bowls, and top with fresh fruits and a sprinkle of nuts or seeds if desired. Enjoy your hearty breakfast!
